Why this plan works
The overnight nonstop is the only major event, with meals handled simply around the flight rather than padding the travel day with incidental stops.
- 7:00 AM
Grab breakfast en route to SFO
7:00 AM
This accounts for breakfast without risking the airport arrival window.
Eat at home or pick up a portable breakfast on the way; do not add a stop in San Francisco before the international check-in deadline.
- 10:40 AM
Typical nonstop · SFO → HND
10:40 AM
A nonstop Haneda flight minimizes fatigue and lands much closer to central Tokyo than Narita.
Book ahead · Fares typically open ~11 months out and are usually cheapest 2–4 months ahead
United Airlines; realistic departure about 10:40 AM from SFO and arrival about 3:00 PM at HND on November 15; nonstop routing, approximately 11 hours 20 minutes; arrive at SFO 3 hours before departure. International departures typically use SFO International Terminal G, but confirm the terminal and schedule.
- 12:30 PM
Onboard lunch
12:30 PM
The meal service falls naturally after takeoff and avoids carrying a full airport meal.
Use the first meal service; bring a substantial snack from SFO if the menu does not appeal.
- 7:00 PM
Onboard dinner or prepacked meal
7:00 PM
Keeping dinner onboard supports rest during the overnight date-line crossing.
Use the later cabin service, supplemented by food purchased after security if desired.
If you fall behind
- What to cut if you fall behind: Skip the airport lunch purchase and rely on the first onboard meal.

Know before you go
Practical notes for this trip — the things worth sorting before you leave.
Booking windows & timing
Reserve the Tokyo and Kyoto hotels as soon as rates open; late-November foliage weekends are among Kyoto’s hardest lodging dates. Book the ryokan’s dinner-inclusive plan at the same time because kaiseki seating is tied to check-in.
Time-sensitiveCheck in · Ryokan YachiyoGinza Kojyu is the trip’s reservation-only dinner and has very limited counter seating. Ask your Tokyo hotel concierge to request it as soon as the restaurant’s November calendar opens, then confirm the current cancellation policy.
Time-sensitiveReservation-only dinner · Ginza KojyuBuy the Tokyo–Kyoto Shinkansen seats when sales open, normally about one month before travel. Select ordinary reserved seats on the right side in the Tokyo-to-Kyoto direction for a possible Mount Fuji view when weather is clear.

Set up before you go
Add a digital Suica to a compatible phone before departure and load a modest balance for Tokyo and Kyoto transit. Each traveler needs a separate transit card or phone, and Shinkansen tickets remain a separate purchase unless linked through SmartEX.
Crowds & timing
Kyoto’s headline foliage sites become congested quickly. Keep the early starts at Tofuku-ji, Kiyomizu-dera and Eikando, and confirm any special evening illumination dates and entry procedures closer to November.

Getting around & driving
No rail pass is assumed: individual Shinkansen tickets plus stored-value transit should cost less than a nationwide pass for this route. Avoid large luggage on city buses; forward suitcases from Tokyo to the Kyoto hotel and carry an overnight bag to the ryokan.

Weather & packing
Tokyo and Kyoto in mid-to-late November commonly have cool mornings, mild afternoons and occasional rain. Bring a packable rain shell and layers that can be removed indoors; temple buildings and ryokan corridors can feel colder than modern hotels.
Money
Cards are widespread, but carry several thousand yen for temple admissions, market counters and older ticket machines. Withdraw cash from a major convenience-store ATM rather than relying on currency-exchange booths.
Local etiquette & language
At the ryokan, remove outdoor shoes at the entrance and follow staff guidance for slippers, tatami and bathing. If using the communal bath, wash before entering the tub and confirm the property’s current tattoo policy if relevant.
Check in · Ryokan Yachiyo
Health & safety
The schedule involves long walking days and numerous temple stairs. Convenience stores and station lockers make it easy to travel light; use luggage forwarding and keep any prescription medicine in its original packaging with documentation.

Questions about this plan
- When should we book our accommodations and key experiences?
- Book Tokyo and Kyoto hotels, especially the ryokan with its dinner plan, as soon as rates open for November foliage season. Secure your Ginza Kojyu dinner reservation when their calendar opens, and Shinkansen seats about one month prior.
- What's the best way to get around between cities and within Tokyo and Kyoto?
- This plan uses the Tokaido Shinkansen for efficient travel between Tokyo and Kyoto. Within cities, use a digital Suica card for subways and local trains, and taxis for shorter, convenient transfers, especially with luggage.
- How should we handle luggage during the trip?
- Forward large suitcases from your Tokyo hotel to your Kyoto hotel. Carry an overnight bag to Ryokan Yachiyo, and on your departure day, forward main luggage to Haneda or a Kyoto Station counter, keeping essentials with you.
- What kind of dining experiences are included in this trip?
- Enjoy diverse meals from casual market breakfasts at Tsukiji, touch-screen sushi in Shibuya, and fiery ramen, to a fine-dining kaiseki dinner at Ginza Kojyu and a traditional kaiseki included with your ryokan stay.
- Will we see autumn foliage on this trip?
- Yes, this itinerary is timed for peak autumn colors. You'll experience spectacular maples at Hama-rikyu Gardens, Tofuku-ji, and Eikando Zenrin-ji, particularly during evening illuminations in Kyoto.
